History Colorado: Black Heritage Trail
Speaker: Dexter Nelson II
History Colorado has received a grant to create a Black Heritage Trail phone application that explores the history of African Americans from pioneer days to today. The Trail will also include some physical destinations where visitors can learn about Colorado’s history. This grant was awarded from the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund through the National Trust for Historic Preservation and with support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
Dexter Nelson II is the Associate Curator of Black History and Cultural Heritage for History Colorado. It is his honor to help History Colorado move towards eliminating white supremacy and giving value to stories traditionally ignored or eliminated completely. There is a very real opportunity to both build the current collections representing the various African American experiences in the West as well as working with both staff and community to foster equality in all that History Colorado does.
